Professional indemnity firm says home workers more popular

One UK professional indemnity insurer has recently stated that, as Brits prefer to choose their work hours and to be their own boss, the number of people who choose to work from home is on the rise.

Millions of Brits have chosen to transform their living rooms, garages, sheds, and even their bedrooms into businesses and work spaces.  Lloyds TSB Business Insurance recently revealed new research findings indicating that either working from home or setting up a home business seems to be a growing trend in the UK.

The business liability insurance provider found that there were approximately 5.9 million firms that were based out of people’s homes in the UK.  Additionally Lloyds found that in excess of 27 per cent of these businesses had been set up in the past 12 months.

Lloyds TSB commercial insurance lines head, Stuart Curtis, stated that the number of Brits that have decided to turn their homes into their place of business is on track to increase  in the coming months due to the still-bleak economic outlook. The range of businesses is wide, including gardening, physiotherapy, teaching, and computer consultancy, to name but a few.

The research found that around 50 per cent of those choosing to work from home do so because they want to be their own boss.  Around 40 per cent remarked that they appreciated working on their own schedule, with many stating that they were appreciative of the opportunity to more easily look after their young children whilst working from home.

However, not everyone was happy.  A significant percentage of research study respondents indicated that they were highly worried about security, while 11 per cent had fears that their home could be the target of a break-in because of their home business.
